Message from the Mayor of Mt Juliet

Greetings:

As Mayor, I've considered paraphrasing an old adage and using it to promote our city . . .  "there are only two kinds of people; those who live in Mt. Juliet and those who want to." While some might think that's a little too bravado and over the top, those of us who know Mt. Juliet well know our city is one of the best kept secrets' around.

Mt. Juliet is absolutely busting!  We are the fastest growing city in Wilson County, the fastest growing County in Tennessee, and the 29th fastest growing County in the United States.  During the recession that began in 2008, while the State of Tennessee, as well as most cities and states, saw declines in sales tax revenue, Mt. Juliet has seen 25 straight month-over-month improvements from the previous year.  In the last two years alone we've seen over 350 businesses open their doors.  That's right, I said 350!  For a city of around 30,000, these numbers are simply phenomenal.  For me and thousands who live and work here though, the incredible aspect is Mt. Juliet has retained its distinct southern atmosphere and charm.  We care deeply about our community and our citizens.

Here are just a few of the great things taking place right now inside our city:

  • The North Mt. Juliet Road widening project is on track and progressing well.  Through use of  American Recovery and Relief Act funding, this project is literally two years ahead of where we thought we would be in 2008.

  • The "Reverse L" section of our Eastern Connector is completed; not only providing commuters, but the faculty and students of Mt. Juliet High School, with a safe, tremendously improved road.  The City Commission has appropriated more dollars to continue this major transportation initiative – the largest "new" connector road in Mt. Juliet in many, many years.

  • The Music City Star commuter train to downtown Nashville continues to set ridership records each month. Our "Quiet Zone", the only one in the state of Tennessee, which allows trains to mute their horns as they enter or exit the city, is working fantastically, and has made a dramatic improvement to our quality of life.

  • Unlike many communities throughout middle Tennessee, Mt. Juliet was largely unscathed by the "Flood of 2010".  We were open for business during the flood and have opened many new stores in the weeks since then.

  • In the first 6 months of 2010, revenue from sale tax receipts was up over $300,000 from the same time last year.

  • In the last 12 months Wal Mart, Lowe's, a second Publix and Aldi's have all opened their doors in MJ.  We've also become home to our first international headquarters, Jupiter Band Corporation, one of the world's largest band instrument repair and sales organizations.

  • The YMCA is looking at 3 potential sites within the city to open a full service recreation center, including a pool, splash park, and indoor walking track.

And . . . possibly the best news of all, our property tax continues to be set at "$0.00"!

Come see what thousands of others have discovered in the last few years; Mt. Juliet has a proud past and a bright future.  For more information about living in or opening a business in Mt. Juliet, please call the city's Director of Economic Development, Mr. Kenny Martin, at 754-2552.

Yours,

Mayor Linda Elam

Bold leadership, with big time results!
